The Breast International Group (BIG) is a non-profit research organization that represents the largest global network of academic groups dedicated to breast research. 30+ clinical trials are run or under development under the BIG umbrella at any one time. BIG is hiring:


Function: Provides overall leadership at BIG Headquarters (HQ) related to the development of scientific programmes and clinical trials, as well as supervision of scientific staff and committees.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Executive Board and CEO to provide leadership at HQ for scientific research carried out under the BIG umbrella, e.g., research programmes, clinical trials, translational research, task forces, etc.
  • Maintains and develops BIG’s culture, values and professional reputation with all staff, members, suppliers, partners, potential and actual funders, and others
  • With the CEO, proposes and develops strategies for the continuous improvement of the functioning of BIG HQ and relationships with BIG member groups, as well as all other partners (e.g., pharmaceutical companies, laboratories, patient advocates, etc).
  • Leads, in collaboration with the Research Operations Director, the development and negotiation of multinational scientific collaborations involving multiple partners, including BIG members, other academic networks, multiple pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and various vendors, among others
  • Contributes to the development of budgets and contracts related to BIG clinical trials and other scientific projects, when requested by other senior BIG HQ staff
  • Provides direct supervision and guidance to all medical and scientific staff, in particular with regard to the resolution of escalated problems
  • Participates in professional development discussions, setting objectives and training plans with the team members directly reporting to this function
  • Participates in recruitment process for R & D staff
  • Ensures compliance to GCP, SOPs and ethical conduct within BIG studies and research programmes
  • Together with the Research Support Director, supervises the planning, execution and reporting of grant applications
  • Plans, attends and follows-up on scientific, project and business meetings
  • Represents BIG in trial-specific committees
  • Oversees committees and task forces, as needed
  • Represents the association in its various scientific activities

Qualifications sought:

  • MD specialized or with experience in oncology, or advanced degree in life sciences with experience in oncology
  • Experience in clinical trials, preferably in the domain of oncology (breast cancer)
  • Strategic thinker, capable of leading difficult negotiations with academic, pharmaceutical, and other commercial partners in a multi-national and multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to work closely with and support key opinion leaders in the organization
  • Proven team management and leadership experience and skills
  • Ability to find pragmatic solutions to a broad range of complex issues
  • Being positive, enthusiastic, and energetic, with a “hands-on” approach
  • Strong sense of ethics and integrity
  • Native-like spoken / written English with excellent communication skills; other languages a plus
  • Interest in working in fast-paced, non-profit academic research environment
